Walks Around Seend
Explore the beautiful countryside around Seend — Collated by the village’s own Anita Shea, with routes starting and finishing in the village.
Whether you’re after a short stroll or a longer route, you’ll find open fields, quiet lanes, canal paths, and some of the best views in Wiltshire.
Many walks start or end near Seend Centre — perfect for a coffee, cake, or bite to eat at Rusty’s Café.
Walk 1 – The Church & Village Loop

A gentle wander through the heart of Seend.
Pass the beautiful 15th-century church,
follow quiet paths behind grand houses,
and loop back via the village pond.
Route Directions
From Seend Centre, turn right onto Rusty Lane.
At the High Street, turn right, then cross and turn left into Church Lane.
(Optional: visit the 15th-century Church of the Holy Cross.)
Follow the path around the left edge of the graveyard to a kissing gate.
Continue along the grassy track with houses on your left.
Go through the next gate and down the steps.
Cross the track, go over the low stile, and follow the path along the top of the hill.
At the next gate, turn left and head back towards the road.
Turn left along the pavement and follow it carefully.
Pass the horse pond and continue until you are opposite a pale green door.
Turn right down the narrow alley into The Lye housing area.
Turn left and follow the road to the playing field.
Cut diagonally across the field to return to Seend Centre.

Walk 2 – Canal & Cleeve

🍺 Pub option
Follow the canal towpath, cross historic locks, and explore Seend’s industrial past.
Optional stop at the Barge Inn makes this a perfect social walk.
This walk has optional routes depending on conditions.
Route Directions
From Seend Centre, turn left down the lane between hedges.
Continue downhill until you reach the canal.
Cross the swing bridge and turn left along the towpath.
After Lock 21, cross the road carefully to rejoin the towpath.
(Take care — traffic can be fast here.)
Continue along the canal past Lock 19 and under the bridge.
Turn right by the waste point and go up onto the bridge.
📍 Look out for the Seend Ironworks information board.
Cross towards the Barge Inn, then turn left up the bridleway (marked by Dormer Cottage / Ferrum House).
Choose Your Route
Option A – Shorter (can be muddy)
Take the left footpath (4 stiles)
Follow it uphill across the field
Continue around to reach Pelch Lane
Option B – Easier (recommended in wet weather)
Stay on the bridleway to the road
Turn left and continue uphill to Pelch Lane
Return to the Centre
At the top, turn right along the pavement (towards Seend/Worton).
Cross at the lowered pavement and take the left fork onto School Road.
Turn left onto Bradley Lane (track beside the house before the school).
Follow the track around the field back to Seend Centre.
Alternative Return
Continue along the main road via Seend High Street
Turn left onto Rusty Lane to return to the Centre

Walk 3 – Hills & Big Views
⏱ 90 mins | 🚶 Moderate | 🏞 Scenic route
A more adventurous loop with hills, quiet lanes, and a canal return.
This Route also passes the historic 15th century church and features stunning views.
Route Directions
From Seend Centre, turn right onto Rusty Lane.
At the High Street, turn right, then cross and turn left into Church Lane.
(Optional: visit the Church of the Holy Cross.)
Follow the path around the left edge of the graveyard to a kissing gate.
Continue along the grassy track with houses on your left.
Go through the next gate and down the steps.
Turn right down Love Lane and follow it downhill.
Continue to the stile and onto Inmarsh Lane.
Turn left along this quiet road as it climbs back up to the High Street.
Turn left, then cross the road carefully.
Just before the horse pond, turn right into Spout Lane.
Follow Spout Lane downhill to the canal bridge.
Go through the gate on your left and turn right along the towpath.
Continue along the canal to Swing Bridge 151 and the sign for Seend Centre.
Cross the bridge and climb back up Rusty Lane to return to the Centre.

Explore the Lye Field
Many of these walks pass through or near the Lye Field — a central community space used for sport, events, and recreation.
Home to Seend FC, tennis courts, and cricket, it’s a great place to pause, explore, or let children run around.
